The external hemorrhoid is actually a swollen varicose vein that forms on the outside of the anus.

Its formation is primarily due to pressure, and it is this hemorrhoid that gives rise to the very unpleasant symptoms of swelling, itching, burning and bleeding. They can be very sore indeed, and can make even walking and getting about extremely painful and constricting to the sufferer.

The immediate relief of these external symptoms is generally easier than dealing with internal ones, however.

One of the easier ways of reducing swelling in this area is the use of ice packs - specifically crushed ice wrapped up in a cloth or muslin bag that can take on the shape of the protrusions and thereby give relief to all the affected area. Used frequently, the ice will reduce the size of the hemorrhoid, stop the burning and arrest the bleeding.

Another water treatment can take the form of a sitz bath, whereby just the buttocks are immersed in just enough cold water to cover the affected area.

However, both these approaches to the relief of pain are not actually a healing treatment in themselves, but they will allow other treatments to take place once the sufferer is feeling more comfortable.

Coupled with the reduction in swelling and bleeding, the hemorrhoids can then be treated with a natural astringent such as witch hazel, which is widely used in the treatment of burns. Aloe Vera can also be applied as it has excellent soothing properties as well as being a natural antiseptic. These two natural substances alone will get the sufferer well on the way to lasting relief from the miseries of external hemorrhoids.

However, they are only dealing with the effects - they are not dealing with the causes.

As mentioned earlier, external hemorrhoids are a type of varicose vein, and have been formed as a result of pressure being put on normal veins in the rectal area - probably the pressure of straining to pass motions - constipation in other words!

So now we have cause-and-effect. The effects can be dealt with as shown, but unless the causes are also addressed, the effects may temporarily go away, merely to come back again, and again, and again.

Diet largely dictates a person’s bowel movements, but to avoid problems in that area it doesn’t necessarily mean a seismic shift in the average person’s diet in order to deal with constipation - just a bit of common sense and an increase in natural liquids and fiber will achieve remarkable results within a short space of time.

Surely that has to be a price worth paying to comprehensibly rid yourself of such a painful and restricting complaint?
