Rotator Cuff Injury Management - What to Do With That Pain in the Shoulder

The rotator cuff muscles are include several ligaments that are highly prone to injury.
Soft tissue injuries are not uncommon with muscles that are used repeatedly. And rotator cuff injuries are very common, especially in people who are active, and they can cause a great deal of pain and discomfort.
A repair of this injury depends on the degree of damage to the rotator cuff. When it’s minimal, the best treatment is rest. If the pain and discomfort are mild, cold application to the affected arm may also be recommended. If the injury or tear is severe, it may require immobilization.

Anti-inflammatory medications, or NSAIDs, are usually given to reduce the pain, inflammation, and strain on the rotator cuff muscles. You should talk to your health care professional before taking any medications in order to prevent side effects, allergies, or adverse reactions. Some people may develop anaphylactic reactions while taking anti-inflammatory medications.
Rotator cuff repair usually includes exercise, physical therapy, and rehabilitation. Range-of-motion exercises are usually the primary aspect of these programs. Physical therapy increases the endurance of the affected muscles. The approach of these therapies should be light and gradual.
Exercises that are included in the treatment of this injury should mimic natural shoulder movements in order to strengthen the muscles and to steadily heal the injury. It is important to complete the entire program to achieve the desired results. Rehabilitation exercises must be done consistently in order to maintain the muscle strength. The goal and focus of these exercises is to make the muscles stronger.
Shoulder exercises should be performed in several repetitions and should gradually increase as time progresses. Proper stretching is an essential part of any rotator cuff rehabilitation program. Stretching improves mobility and blood circulation, thus minimizing the pain.
Physical therapy, like other treatments, requires patience. Treatment for this injury is done using a ladder step approach. This is necessary to prevent further aggravation to the delicate muscles. Aggressive management of the injury could make the condition worse instead of better.
Physical therapy and rehabilitation programs are usually offered through or referred by health care institutions. Surgical treatment is required when there is a complete rupture of the ligaments. This type of treatment is performed by licensed surgeons who specialize in surgical rotator cuff repair.
Healthcare professionals emphasize the need for professional supervision during any type of physical therapy or treatment. You should never attempt to perform exercises without being properly instructed by a professional. Attempting your own rotator cuff treatment may only add insult to your rotator cuff injury.
