It is natural for expectant parents to be curious about the gender of their unborn baby. There are many gender quizzes and calculators available online, which claim to enable the parents to predict baby gender. There are also many old wives methods for gender prediction of an unborn child. Some dangle their wedding ring on the abdomen of the expectant mother. While some perform a color check of the mother’s urine after it is added to a cup filled with Drano. But all these quizzes, and old wives methods are mere tell tale and are not accurate.

Popular methods of baby gender prediction

- The best and most accurate method to predict baby gender is an ultra sound image. This method if performed 16 weeks after conception can predict the unborn baby’s gender with up to 95% accuracy. This method is the most popular as it is non-invasive and hence safe. Performing an ultra sound for gender prediction of an unborn child does not harm the mother or child in any way.

- Another safe but less accurate method is to perform a blood test to determine the active fetal chromosomal DNA in the mother’s blood. Needless to say these tests should be performed by a registered medical practitioner under the supervision of a gynecologist.

Apart from natural curiosity there are more serious reasons why parents may wish to predict baby gender before birth.

The most common reason is the presence of genetic abnormality in one or both parents. In these cases, either a male or female child may be affected by the congenital abnormality.

- Amniocentesis is an invasive method used not only for gender prediction, but also to determine congenital abnormalities in an unborn child.

- Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) is another invasive technique used to determine the gender of a fetus. In cases where abnormalities are detected, the parents can opt for medical termination of pregnancy. But ideally if parents fear congenital abnormalities, it is best to go in for sex selection.

Modern technology allows parents to pre-determine the gender of their child. Sex selection also gives parents the freedom of choice to have an offspring of the gender that they desire.
