What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids affect the internal or external veins around the rectum or anus. There are two types of hemorrhoids: internal and external. Internal hemorrhoids occur when there is a lot of force exerted on the internal hemorrhoidal veins. External hemorrhoids occur when the external veins around the anus become swollen.

Preventative measures

To prevent getting hemorrhoids, eat plenty of fiber (between 25 to 30 grams a day), get lots of exercise and add stool softeners to your diet. These measures should be taken to prevent hemorrhoids from occurring in the future.

Treatment methods

Surgical methods can be used to treat internal hemorrhoids. One method called Rubber Band Litigation, blocks the hemorrhoids so that they fall off. Another method, called Infrared Photocoagulation, uses a small infrared light to clot the vein to shrink the hemorrhoid.

Some people prefer a more natural way of treating hemorrhoids. A more natural method of treating hemorrhoids is to apply a topical cream externally on the anus. Unlike other treatment methods, they are not meant to be taken internally, but they are designed to be applied topically to the anal area. For example, Witch Hazel or compress cream is made from the leaves and bark of a plant called Hamamelis Virginiana, and is readily available at the drug store.

Note: These are common methods of treating hemorrhoids. However, before trying any of the above treatment methods, it is always best to ask your doctor for advice. Keep these methods in mind to discuss with your doctor.
