- Take notes of your treatment experience. At a minimum, it’s a good idea to keep track of the time and date of each treatment, the dosage or amount of time the treatment was used, and the results immediately after the treatment, thirty minutes after the treatment, and again in perhaps an hour or two after the treatment.
- Give each treatment option sufficient time to see if it works for you. Some conservative treatments will either work or they won’t, and you will know fairly soon after the first treatment experience whether it works for you. But others require some time before results can be expected. Give each treatment option at least two to three weeks of consistent appropriate use before deciding that it is not working for you.
- Always, always, ALWAYS check with your doctor before starting any new treatment option, whether it’s conservative or not. Even the most innocuous-seeming “natural” supplements can interact negatively with other substances. Make sure your doctor knows everything that you are trying to relieve your pain.
- Go into each treatment experience with an open mind. Some treatments, such as acupuncture, might seem a little “new age” to some people. Yet, acupuncture has shown promising results in many pain-relief studies, especially for fibromyalgia sufferers. Try not to make conclusions before you give each treatment option a try. The one you dismiss out of hand might just be the most effective treatment available for you.
- Don’t give up. It can take a long time before you find the right combination of treatments for your particular pain condition. If you give one conservative treatment an honest try, but it does nothing to relieve your pain, do not give up on treatment altogether. Simply move on to the next treatment option on your list. Remember: your mental attitude can go a long way towards improving the results that you get with any treatment option.

Common Migraine Pain Condition Also Prevalent In Cluster Headache

A pain condition common in people with migraines also has a high prevalence in patients with cluster headache, according to a study conducted by researchers at the Jefferson Headache Center at Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience.
Approximately half of a group of patients with cluster headaches experienced cutaneous allodynia, a condition that causes patients to have pain as a response to normally inconspicuous sensations, according to Michael Marmura, M.D., assistant professor of Neurology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University.
The study, which was published in the Journal of Headache and Pain, included 41 patients with either chronic or episodic cluster headaches. The researchers tested for allodynia by brushing a gauze pad over the forehead, neck and forearms. Patients then reported if the gauze was painful or unpleasant, or not.
Twenty of the patients experienced allodynia, with the most common site of pain being the forehead. There were no significant differences between patients who experienced allodynia and patients who did not. The majority of patients were using preventive medications, which is a limitation of the study.
According to Dr. Marmura, allodynia has typically been described in migraines, but this is the largest study to date showing that allodynia occurs in cluster headache.
“It was surprising to find that allodynia was so common in patients with cluster headaches,” Dr. Marmura said. “This could have important treatment implications, and suggests that there may be overlap in mechanisms for pain between migraines and cluster headaches.”

Drinking five or more cups of coffee a day increases the risk of having heart problems 2.8 times, according to researchers at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions in Baltimore. Robert Superko of the University of California’s Center for Progressive Atherosclerosis Management in Berkeley reported that decaffeinated coffee ??” but no regular ??” may nudge cholesterol levels in the direction of increased heart risk. The 16-week study involved 181 healthy, nonsmoking men who routinely drank three to six cups of coffee per day. The researchers provided all volunteers with regular, drip-grind coffee and instructed them on how to brew it. Eight weeks later, they randomly assigned each man to one of three regimens: the same coffee, a switch to decaf, or abstinence from coffee. Participants were asked to avoid other caffeine sources throughout the study.
Those who drank regular coffee and those who abstained showed no changes in blood cholesterol levels during the study, the team reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The decaf group, however, experienced a roughly 6 percent increase in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, the so-called “bad” cholesterol linked to heart attacks.
A meta-analysis by Martin G. Myers, M.D., University of Toronto and colleagues from other institutions, involving 11 published studies, was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. These studies lasted from two to 35 years and followed people who initially had no evidence of heart disease. Only three of the studies found that increased rates of coffee drinking are associated with the development of heart disease. Most (eight) found no evidence of an association at all. The authors concluded that people who consumed up to one cup of coffee daily had the same incidence of heart disease as those who consumed more than six cups a day.
Croup: Signs and Symptoms, Diagnosis,Treatment and Prevention

Croup is an inflammation of the upper airway, causing swelling around the vocal cords and windpipe. When air is pushed through this narrowed passage, it causes the vocal cords to vibrate, resulting in a barking cough.
